First CRISPR Gene-Editing Medicine Approved!

The first CRISPR gene-editing medicine just got approved in the US! Here’s what’s happening: The new therapy called Casgevy treats sickle cell disease, where a mutated version of a protein called hemoglobin turns healthy red blood cells into harder “crescent” cells which can clump together and can cause extreme pain and deprive people’s bodies of oxygen.

The most effective treatment until now has been bone marrow transplants – to give people other people’s cells that produce normal hemoglobin. But NOW, with CRISPR, it doesn’t need to be someone else’s cells!

It’s hard to overstate how much this treatment could change people’s lives, reduce suffering – and hopefully just be the start of a new wave of new medical treatments.
