How LOUD is a sonic boom from a supersonic plane? 20 years ago, when the famous Concorde stopped flying, the answer was close to a balloon popping right next to you or just above nearby thunder. But now NASA is building a new, hopefully much quieter supersonic plane.

That matters, because sonic booms were a big part of why supersonic planes were banned over many countries – and why you can’t fly supersonic today. If NASA succeeds, they could help bring back supersonic flight, and allow you and me to fly faster than sound.
