To understand the basics, try holding up your finger and closing one eye at a time. Each of your eyes takes in a slightly different view of the world, which is a big part of how you perceive depth. That’s called “stereopsis.” We’ve been using stereopsis to trick ourselves for hundreds of years, but this device and headsets like it has gotten REALLY good at it.
