Thousands Out In Copenhagen As Queen Margrethe II Abdicates Throne For Denmark's New King Frederik

Danes gather in front of the country’s parliament in Copenhagen to witness Queen Margrethe II passing the throne to her first-born son, Frederik. The queen, Denmark’s longest-reigning monarch, announced her decision to abdicate on New Year’s Eve after 52 years as queen, a historic move not seen in nearly 900 years.

People from all over Denmark flock to the capital, reflecting the monarchy’s immense popularity. The royal family holds significant cultural value, symbolizing Danish fairytales and traditions, as mentioned by Anna Karina Laursen, 59.

The crown prince, Frederik, and his Australian-born wife, Mary, scheduled to leave the royal palace at 1235 GMT in a 1958 Rolls-Royce. Margrethe, 83, follows by horse carriage a few minutes later for her final ride as monarch through the capital’s streets.

While there won’t be a coronation like in Britain, the succession occurs around 1300 GMT, as Margrethe signs the abdication declaration during a Council of State meeting at parliament. The government, Frederik, and his oldest son, Christian, 18, the new heir to the throne, participate in this historic moment.

Approximately one hour later, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen proclaims the new king on the parliament balcony, and Frederik delivers a short speech. The new king and his wife then ride by carriage back to the palace.

The Amalienborg complex, home to both the outgoing queen and the new reigning couple, sees increased demand, with hotel rooms selling out quickly after Margrethe’s abdication announcement. Hotel operator Scandic reports a 50% surge in bookings compared to a usual mid-January weekend.

Margrethe, who previously expressed intent to remain on the throne for life, did not provide an exact reason for her decision but mentioned a major back surgery in February last year prompting her to reconsider her future.

The new Danish royal couple, Frederik and Mary, assumes the throne amidst strong public support. Recent surveys indicate that 82% of Danes expect Frederik to perform well in his new role, with 86% expressing the same confidence in Mary.
