Fire & Ice | Lava Flows In Iceland After Volcano Erupts, 5th Time In Reykjanes Since 2021

In southwest Iceland, a volcano erupts on Jan 14, marking the fifth eruption on the Reykjanes peninsula since 2021, according to the country’s meteorological office. The Civil Protection agency dispatches a coast guard helicopter to assess the situation and determine the exact location.

The eruption initiates north of the fishing town of Grindavik, though the precise emergence point of the lava and its direction remain unclear, as reported by broadcaster RUV.

The previous eruption on the peninsula began in the Svartsengi volcanic system on December 18, resulting in the complete evacuation of Grindavik’s 4,000 inhabitants and the closure of the popular tourist destination, the Blue Lagoon geothermal spa. Fortunately, Grindavik was spared as the lava flowed in a different direction from the town.

Iceland, positioned between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates, two of the planet’s largest, remains a seismic and volcanic hot spot due to the opposing movements of these plates.
