Iceland Volcano Eruption On Camera | Thousands Evacuated After Weeks Of Seismic Activity | Reykjanes

In southwestern Iceland on Tuesday, Dec19, smoke and lava spew from the site of a volcanic eruption. The orange glow against the night sky is visible from a distance, and a plume of smoke billows into the air as certain roads around the site are closed off by the police.

The volcano erupted late on Monday, Dec 18 following weeks of intense earthquake activity, as reported by the country’s Meteorological Office. The eruption poses a threat to a nearby town. In anticipation of a potentially significant eruption on the Reykjanes peninsula, authorities evacuated the fishing town of Grindavik, home to nearly 4,000 inhabitants, last month. The nearby Blue Lagoon geothermal spa was also closed.

Despite the volcanic activity, Reykjavik’s nearby Keflavik International Airport remains open, though numerous delays are listed for both arrivals and departures. The local police have raised their alert level, and the country’s civil defense warns the public against approaching the area while emergency personnel assess the situation.
