In the 70âs we discovered new forms of life living next to hydrothermal vents produced by underwater volcanoes. It was our first observation of life that didnât use light to produce energy. But now scientists have confirmed that life doesnât just live in and around these vents, they also live UNDER the surface.
By using a remote operated vehicle to flip over pieces of the seafloor, scientists discovered a thriving community of bacteria, protists, snails and tubeworms.
