The newly elected President has welcomed the redeployment of US forces in Somalia where al-Shabab attacks had heightened due to a prolonged electoral crisis. This week, US President Joe Biden’s administration announced plans to send about 600 American forces to support targeted operations against al-Shabab militants.  

Last Sunday Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was elected President of Somalia for a second time – he was previously president from 2012-2017. Undoubtedly the biggest challenge on his agenda will be the fight against Al Shabaab.
