Sam Waterfall is a father, entrepreneur and health seeker. Between 2016 and 2018, the different roles in his life converged in a ‘perfect storm’ – from guiding the world’s biggest food brands to offer improved gut health and immunity, to the birth of his daughter via emergency Caesarean-section.
Sam found his attention converging from all directions on the most recently discovered new human organ – The Microbiome. He noticed that poor health and reduced diversity of the microbiome is inextricably linked to many of today’s rising health problems from life-threatening allergies to poor mental health and even obesity. Yet alarmingly, few people are aware of these connections.
In his talk, Sam addresses two damaging misconceptions – marketing stories gone wrong – which are responsible for preventing many people from effectively “nurturing their inner ecosystems”. He concludes by sharing four clear and simple actions that everyone can take to improve the health of their microbiome and live in a better balance with their body’s 100 trillion essential microbial partners.
TEDxNewcastleUniversity’s annual conference discussed the theme of ‘Build A Better Future’ in March 2019, looking to connect our present potential with the infinite possibilities ahead. Sam is a former international food marketing consultant, having spent ten years launching new foods in over 50 countries on five continents. But it was co-founding a probiotics startup and the birth of his daughter that began a very healthy relationship with his body’s microbial passengers. In his personal and engaging talk, Sam shares a transformational new view on your body’s essential bugs and bacteria that could seriously improve your life. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
