China’s national observatory has warned of more torrential rain in southern China. Downpours have caused landslides and floods in the past week that destroyed homes, infrastructure and crops. Relief and flood control personnel have been working to help trapped residents. Officials in the city of Guilin call it the worst flooding since 1998.
Also in China, visiting German economy minister Robert Habeck has told his hosts that they are indispensable to achieving global climate goals. Chinese officials had told Habeck they were expanding coal production – for security reasons.
During visits to Beijing, Hangzhou, and a BMW plant in Shanghai, Habeck acknowledged that efforts to curb global warming have been overshadowed recently, making cooperation with China more important than ever. He said China must find a safe alternative to coal.
