China Asserts Sovereignty in South China Sea Amid Rising Tensions with Philippines

During a routine news briefing, Wang Wenbin, the spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, stated that China’s territorial sovereignty and maritime rights in the South China Sea remain unchanged regardless of any policies implemented by the Philippines. He stressed the importance of the Philippines adhering to previous agreements and consensus reached between the two countries, as well as the provisions outlined in the joint declaration signed by China and ASEAN countries regarding the South China Sea. Wang Wenbin urged the Philippines to stop any actions that could be seen as infringing or provocative, including seeking intervention from foreign entities in South China Sea matters. Instead, he encouraged both nations to engage in negotiations and consultations to manage the situation, highlighting the shared responsibility for maintaining peace and stability in the South China Sea. These statements come after Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr’s decision to enhance coordination on maritime security in response to perceived challenges to territorial integrity and peace resulting from the ongoing dispute with China in the region.
