Brazil President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and visiting French President Emmanuel Macron’s bonhomie was on full full display as they visited the Amazon rainforest. Many of the cosy pictures have since circulated widely among social media users in Brazil alongside montages and witty comments. Macron responded to the memes saying “some people compared the images of my visit to Brazil with those of a wedding, and I say to them: It was a wedding!” Macron’s warm relations with Lula mark a departure from the frosty ties between the French leader and Brazil’s former right-wing president Jair Bolsonaro. Macron is the first French president to visit Brazil in 11 years and marks a thaw in bilateral ties after years of friction under Bolsonaro.
