US Slams “Cynical” Russia & China For Vetoing UN Resolution On Gaza Truce | Moscow-Beijing Hit Back

The United Nations Security Council encountered a significant deadlock on Friday as a resolution proposing an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and an Israel-Hamas hostage deal failed to pass due to vetoes from Russia and China. The measure, put forth by the United States, aimed to establish a six-week ceasefire to safeguard civilians and facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid. Despite garnering support from eleven of the Council’s fifteen members, the veto from Russia and China prevented its adoption.

In response to the impasse, the Council scheduled a meeting for Monday to consider an alternative resolution crafted by elected members. This new draft calls for an immediate ceasefire during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, the release of all hostages, and increased humanitarian assistance to Gaza. Notably absent from this resolution are provisions supporting ongoing diplomatic efforts for a ceasefire, reflecting a departure from the U.S.-proposed resolution.

The U.S. decision to back a resolution explicitly advocating for a ceasefire marks a departure from its earlier stance during the five-month conflict in Gaza, reflecting a hardening position under the Biden administration. Previously, the U.S. had been resistant to using the term “ceasefire” and had vetoed measures containing such language. U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, expressed disappointment over the veto, accusing Russia and China of obstructing the resolution for what she termed as “cynical” and “petty” reasons. She criticized both nations for failing to condemn Hamas’s attack on Israel and questioned their commitment to diplomatic efforts for lasting peace and humanitarian aid.
