Taylor Swift Deepfakes Reveal This Huge Problem

Congress is getting involved with the Taylor Swift deepfakes and that might be a great thing. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, a bunch of explicit, fake images that looked like Taylor Swift went viral on X/Twitter and got millions of views before they got taken down. Despite how much people talk about political deepfakes, the VAST majority of deepfakes are for exactly what you might think. 98%! And 99% of those are of women. I’ve been covering this issue as a journalist for several years, and I spoke to Kristen Bell about it a few years ago. It’s far past time to fix this problem.

The problem is, there are also all kinds of rules about how people can use your face – for art or journalism for example. It’s had to legislate, but it’s getting more important, as AI generated video like Sora gets better. So, Congress is trying to figure out what to do about it. Here’s what they’re suggesting…

It’s a tricky problem and sometimes it’s hard to feel optimistic. But this is how new laws get made! We’re supposed to see a need and figure it out. And with new attention on this, I’m hopeful we can. I mean, if anyone can… it’s Taylor Swift.
