Speaking in New Hampshire about the Iowa caucuses, where he came in a distant second to former President Donald Trump, DeSantis acknowledged the challenge within the party.
DeSantis is facing formidable odds in New Hampshire and has strategically chosen to focus much of his campaign efforts on South Carolina, the next significant Republican nominating contest scheduled for Feb. 24. Andrew Romeo, the communications director for the DeSantis campaign, emphasized that DeSantis remains committed to the race “for the long haul,” extending beyond South Carolina and into subsequent contests.
Aides to DeSantis have identified his best chance for continued competitiveness as contingent on Nikki Haley losing her home state on Feb. 24 and subsequently withdrawing from the race. This scenario would leave DeSantis in a one-on-one matchup against Trump. Mr. Romeo argued, “No one will be funding a bubble-wrapped candidate who can’t win her home state.” As DeSantis navigates the complex dynamics of the Republican primary, the outcome remains uncertain, with the tug-of-war between different factions within the party playing a pivotal role.
