Hundreds of German truckers are currently descending on Berlin to participate in a mass protest gaining momentum against the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. The protests stem from a recent report revealing that two senior AfD members participated in a meeting discussing plans for the mass deportation of citizens of foreign origin. The proposals, disclosed by Correctiv, suggesting the deportation of “unassimilated citizens” to a “model state in North Africa” have sparked outrage across Germany. Critics have drawn parallels between these plans and the Nazis’ historical intent to deport European Jews to Madagascar.
Protests have been escalating nationwide since the revelation, attracting tens of thousands of participants. Demonstrations, including one in Cologne where protester Stephan Kalsh voiced concerns, are increasingly demanding the banning of the AfD. Notable figures like Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock have attended some of these protests.
Despite the AfD’s denial that the deportation plans represent party policy, the party, currently polling second nationally, is facing internal strife. Co-leader Alice Weidel has distanced herself from an adviser involved in the discussed plans. Germany’s domestic spy chief, Thomas Haldenwang, has issued warnings about extremist movements within the AfD, leading to the party being placed under security surveillance.
The reported deportation plans have garnered widespread condemnation from political and security leaders. Chancellor Scholz has urged democrats to unite against far-right “fanatics,” while Haldenwang has called on the “silent majority” to awaken to the threat posed by such extremist movements.
