Farmers Against Scholz Government | Tractors Block Berlin Roads As Germany Sees Widespread Protests

Farmers in Germany are expressing their dissatisfaction with the government’s plan to eliminate tax breaks on diesel used in tractors. The protests have escalated over the past week, with farmers blocking highways and slowing down traffic throughout the country. The demonstrations, culminating in a gathering in Berlin, have tapped into broader discontent with Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s government.

As of late Sunday, the designated space for vehicles at the Brandenburg Gate, the location of Monday’s demonstration, was already filled with columns of tractors. The farmers are adamant about convincing the government to completely abandon the proposed tax cuts, despite the government’s recent concessions. On January 4, the government modified its original plan, deciding to retain a car tax exemption for farming vehicles and implement the diesel tax breaks in stages over three years.

Chancellor Scholz, in a video message on Saturday, stated that the government considered the farmers’ arguments and reached a “good compromise.” He promised further discussions on additional measures to ensure a prosperous future for agriculture. However, leaders from the governing parties’ parliamentary groups are set to meet with farmers’ representatives, although officials have downplayed the possibility of reversing the subsidy cuts.

The decision to cut tax breaks is driven by the necessity to address a significant budget deficit in 2024. The farmers’ protests coincide with a broader discontent with the Scholz government, known for public conflicts and prolonged debates over poorly communicated decisions. Chancellor Scholz acknowledged that concerns extend beyond farming subsidies, acknowledging that various crises, conflicts and worries about the future are unsettling the public.
