As the Israeli offensive in Gaza continues, the death toll rises every day. But getting independent and accurate information on casualties is difficult. Israel has barred international journalists from entering Gaza as its military fights Hamas, classified as a terrorist group by multiple countries. Many Palestinian journalists and human rights workers have fled Gaza to save themselves – leaving the Palestinian health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza to keep count of casualties. International bodies have attested to the reliability of Palestinian numbers, despite the immense challenges on the ground.
