Thousands evacuated from Greek islands as fires rage out of control | DW News

The Greek island of Corfu has become the latest area affected by wildfires raging across Greece as its heatwave continues.
The coast guard says a rescue operation has been taking place on a beach in the the northeast of the island — popular with foreign tourists. Nearly a thousand people have reportedly been taken to safety. Officials have also issued evacuation alerts for 12 villages.
On another popular Greek vacation island, Rhodes almost 20,000 residents and tourists have been evacuated from homes and hotels on to escape wildfires. Officials there say the operation has been the biggest the country has ever undertaken.
