Germany is planning to strengthen its World-War-II-era bunker system after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The interior minister wants old basement shelters upgraded after years of neglect.

Many bunkers were sold and turned into all sorts of creative spaces, including farms, nightclubs, and apartments.

The German government still owns nearly 600 bunkers that are not ready for use according to military experts.

Al Jazeera’s Step Vaessen reports from Berlin, Germany.
