In US news and current events today, Listen to Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms speak out about police brutality in the wake of Rayshard Brooks’ death.
After the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis sparked a global uprising against police racism, police brutality, and police violence, the message seemed to be clear. Thousands upon thousands marched in George Floyd protests and Black Lives Matter protests to seek justice for George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and hundreds of other Black people and people of color who have been unjustly killed by the police. Yet despite the clear calls for change, police continue to escalate and use deadly force unnecessarily against people of color. Atlanta police shot and killed Rayshard Brooks, a 27-year-old man who was sleeping in his car in a Wendy’s drive-through. Rayshard Brooks protests quickly grew in size, and as Atlanta police reckon with another killing of an unarmed Black man, Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms did not mince words about the urgent need to change the way policing is done in Atlanta and around the country. Whether its police reform, defund the police, or abolish the police, it’s clear that something needs to change.
