In US news and current events today, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has called for an end to police militarization and is leading the charge on the movement to defund the police. As city budgets struggle, many activists have noted a disproportionate amount of public funds given to the police, which have been used to purchase police military equipment more suited for Fallujah than protecting a community.

Police reform will require a top-down rethinking of the police’s role in a community, to transform them away from an occupying force and into a role that deescalates rather than responds with overwhelming might. The Black Lives Matter protests and George Floyd protests have shone a spotlight on police brutality and police racism than ever before, and AOC and other activists are trying to use the moment to enact real change. Will Alexandria Ocasio Cortez be successful? Only time will tell, but as 2020 progresses, all eyes are focused on how America will reform its relationship with police.
