HAPPENING NOW—UK UPDATE: Government officials deliver their daily briefing on the United Kingdom’s response to the novel coronavirus outbreak. More than 26,000 people have died from COVID-19 in the UK, the third-highest death toll in the world behind the United States and Italy. Yesterday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson told the nation that they were ‘past the peak and on the downward slope.’ He would not say when the country could begin to remove its lockdown measures. A survey released by the British Chamber of Commerce last week found that 71% of private firms have furloughed at least some staff since the start of the outbreak, with a third of firms reporting that they have furloughed 75-100% of staff. 59% of firms survey reported they had just three months of cash in reserve or less. ‘We are going to make sure that the U.K. bounces back as strongly and as fast as we possibly can,’ Johnson said, ‘but we’ve got to be sensible.’
