Shockingly, Rudy Giuliani’s apparent efforts to solicit election interference from yet another foreign power have not gone over well. President Trump’s perennially foot-in-mouth lawyer has now canceled his trip to Ukraine—the intent of which was apparently to hurt Joe Biden’s electability in 2020.

Giuliani was set to visit with Ukrainian president-elect Volodymyr Zelensky in Kiev, ostensibly to discuss both the special counsel’s investigation into Russia’s interference in the 2016 election and the involvement of Hunter Biden, Joe Biden’s son, with gas company Burisma Holdings. The elder Biden had previously, reportedly pressured the Ukrainian government to fire its corrupt prosecutor general, albeit after investigations into Burisma closed in 2015.

Giuliani’s trip to Ukraine was widely criticized as corrupt in intent—a transparent bid to collude with a foreign power to damage Trump’s biggest 2020 rival. Giuliani certainly didn’t help his case in an interview with The New York Times, stating “We’re not meddling in an election, we’re meddling in an investigation, which we have a right to do. . . . I’m going to give them reasons why they shouldn’t stop [the investigation] because that information will be very, very helpful to my client, and may turn out to be helpful to my government.”

House Judiciary Committee chairman and New York representative Jerrold Nadler said of Giuliani’s trip, “We have come to a very sorry state when it is considered O.K. for an American politician, never mind an attorney for the president, to go and seek foreign intervention in American politics.” Connecticut senator Chris Murphy characterized Giuliani’s efforts as “next level” and “openly asking a foreign government to investigate his political rival,” to which Giuliani re-upped his conspiracy claim on twitter.

According to the Times, Giuliani confirmed on Fox News that he’d canceled the visit, blaming Democrat opposition “They say I was meddling in the election — ridiculous — but that’s their spin.” Additionally, advisers to Mr. Zelensky had reportedly urged the president-elect not to meet with Giuliani.

Giuliani otherwise intends to reschedule a paid speech in Ukraine regarding Middle East policy for the fall.
