A butterfly sanctuary filed a restraining order against Trump’s border wall. The National Butterfly Center in Texas filed an order which would keep contractors and federal agents off of its property. The center is located in a small town called Mission in the Rio Grande Valley
‘This land was all set aside for species conservation both plant and animal and that is what they are now destroying for border wall construction. They’ve already begun eliminating the trees and brush on the federal refuse tracks just to the west of us.’ -Marianna Trevino Wright , Executive Director of National Butterfly Center
The order argues that to build the wall would violate the Constitution and would cause ‘irreparable harm’ to the environment.
The wall would make 70% of its 100-acre refuge inaccessible. The National Butterfly Center attracts 35,000 visitors annually and is home to nearly 200 different species of butterflies .
The center has been trying for over a year to stop construction on the barrier. It initially filed the lawsuit on Dec 2017. As of Feb 12, no hearing has been scheduled on the center’s request . The U.S. Customs and Border Protection plans to start building the wall in Feb 2019. President Donald Trump famously sparked the longest government shutdown in US history to secure border wall funding.
