The US Navy is building an underwater test facility for hypersonic missiles, with plans to deploy such missiles on next-generation submarines. The hypersonic missile being built by the US is a non-nuclear weapon that flies five times as fast as the speed of sound on a shallow trajectory. The Strategic Forces Subcommittee was also told that while Russia has deployed hypersonic weapons in Ukraine, it was still lagging behind China’s arsenal. The US Air Force is also seeking to move ahead with flight testing for its new hypersonic cruise missile in fiscal year 2025. Meanwhile, the US is falling behind Russia in the number of icebreaker ships available for Arctic operations.
