Turkish President Erdogan Visits Hungary PM Orban Amid EU, NATO Turmoil, Israel & Ukraine Wars

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is set to visit Hungary’s capital, Budapest, on Monday to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Türkiye-Hungary Friendship Agreement of 1923. During the visit, Erdoğan will discuss various aspects of bilateral cooperation with Hungarian leaders, including President Katalin Novak and Prime Minister Victor Orban. The two nations aim to boost their current trade volume of $3.3 billion to $6 billion through collaborative efforts.

Diplomatic relations between Turkey and Hungary, severed after World War I, were reinstated with the Treaty of Friendship signed in Istanbul on Dec. 18, 1923. The visit will involve a High-Level Strategic Council Meeting, where ministers from both countries will evaluate relations and sign new agreements.

Trade-wise, Turkey exports a range of products to Hungary, including cotton textiles, iron and steel goods, motor vehicles, machinery, and electronic devices. Important agreements in the energy sector are also anticipated, with plans for Turkey to export natural gas to Hungary starting next year.

The two nations will explore cooperation on various fronts, including third-world countries and entities, with a focus on Africa. The ambassador highlighted the significance of the “2024 Turkey-Hungary Culture Year” to be launched during Erdoğan’s visit.

Ties between Turkey and Hungary were elevated to the level of strategic partnership in 2013. The ambassador emphasized the momentum gained in bilateral relations through mutual visits, with 2023 witnessing increased contacts at the highest level.

Notably, the leaders are expected to address the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, emphasizing Turkey’s call for a cease-fire and seeking international support against Israeli actions. Additionally, discussions may revolve around Sweden’s delayed NATO membership, attributed to concerns over its stance on groups deemed security threats by Turkey.
