Is our food costing us more than we pay? | DW Business

Health, social and environmental damage at the hands of the agrifood system add up to 10 trillion dollars per year.. that’s ten percent of the entire world’s GDP. That’s according to a study by the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization. The FAO says 70 percent of the costs stem from unhealthy dietary patterns which lead to obesity and other diseases. 20 percent are caused by environmental damage, created by nitrogen emissions, greenhouse gases, and change in land and water use. According to the study, three quarters of all hidden costs are generated in high- and upper-middle-income countries… with low-income countries being hardest hit by the consequences. Why aren’t these hidden costs already factored into global food markets? A conversation with Raymond Torres from the economic think tank Funcas.
