The risk of a wider Middle East conflict appears very real, as Israel faces fire from Hezbollah across its border with Lebanon as it battles Hamas in Gaza. Like Hamas, Hezbollah has the destruction of Israel as its stated mission and is also designated as a terrorist organisation by the US. Hezbollah, which has fired on Israeli positions from the north, says it is “fully prepared” to join Hamas in the war against Israel if required.
