US soldier Private 2nd Class (PV2) Travis King is being held in North Korea after crossing the border from South Korea without authorisation, the US military has confirmed.

PV2 King, 23, crossed from South Korea into the North after joining a Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) border tour.

Earlier, the White House said the US had tried to contact Pyongyang through “multiple channels” but had had no response.

It is unclear if PV2 King has defected or hopes to return.
