The unmanned surveillance aircraft is said to have been downed by the Revolutionary Guard. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said the drone had invaded its territory, Islamic Republic News Agency reported. The drone came down close to the village of Kuhmobarak, according to the Fars News Agency.

The US military have declined to comment on the claims.

The reported takedown comes after increasing tensions between the two countries following an attack in the Gulf of Oman last week.

Two oil tankers were attacked on the strategic Hormuz Strait.

The US and UK accused Iran of being responsible for the incidents but Tehran has denied the allegations.

The US added the IRGC attempted to down one of its drones last week ahead of the tanker attack.

Fears of war surged after the Pentagon announced on Monday the US was deploying 1,000 additional troops to the Middle East amid tensions with Iran.

The build up of troops in the Middle East by the US would be in addition to the 1,500 troop increase announced last month in response to tanker attacks in May that were also blamed on Iran.

US concerns about the threat to American forces and interests in the region have increased steadily in recent weeks, particularly after the oil tanker attacks at the entrance to the Gulf on Thursday.

The United States last week released images it said showed Iran’s Revolutionary Guard were behind Thursday’s attacks near the Strait of Hormuz.

The two oil tankers set on fire were the Norwegian-owned Front Altair, which was set ablaze, and the Japanese-owned Kokuka Courageous.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said following the tanker attack: “President Trump has done everything he can to avoid war. We don’t want war.

“The United States is going make sure that we take all the actions necessary, diplomatic and otherwise that achieve that outcome.”
