Monica Helms, the creator of the transgender flag, acknowledged why the Transgender Day of Remembrance is still needed 20 years after it was founded by LGBTQ Nation correspondent Gwen Smith in a recent op-ed.

But buried in her article was this video that she created that’s a visual – and gut wrenching – reminder why Trans Day of Remembrance exists. Helms’ video walks you through all the horrendous suffering this year’s victims endured, humanizing them in a way a simple news story can’t.
