Actress Aya Cash wants her characters to help ‘demystify’ mental health, sex, and the many versions of womanhood.

Aya Cash talked to NowThis about mental health, sex scenes, and women-led crews for her new film, ‘Social Animals.’ The actress said she’d been interested in playing a different type of character.

“I try to now choose projects that have meaning to me,” she explained. “I think showing, demystifying, mental health issues, and making people less ashamed of them is really important in our media.”

Cash’s character has obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). Along with its mental health themes, she also thinks ‘Social Animals’ breaks barriers with its women-led cast and crew.

“I’ve worked with a lot of female writer-directors recently, which is wonderful, and hopefully shows that there’s a change and awareness in our industry that things have been imbalanced and we are going to correct that,” she said. “But what’s even more rare is to have so many females who work the crew. I think all, if not all, almost all of the heads of departments were women.”

Being surrounded by women on set also made filming sex scenes a bit more interesting for Cash.

“It’s just a different feeling,” she said. “I think female directors and female crews are just a little more sensitive in that way. There’s just an ability to be vulnerable.”
