Jo-Issa Rae Diop, now professionally known as Issa Rae, is dominating television and revolutionizing comedy. Her brilliant HBO series Insecure has garnered critical acclaim, but Issa was working on her comedy long before the show premiered.

She left Los Angeles and moved to New York to pursue her dreams. After her New York City apartment was burglarized, she returned to LA — but she refused to give up. The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl premiered on YouTube in 2011. In 2012, she partnered with Grey’s Anatomy legend Shonda Rhimes to work on a TV show, but the pilot was rejected. Eventually she was approached by HBO and called up Larry Wilmore, who had a hand in favorites like In Living Color and Sister, Sister. That’s when Insecure was born.
