A U.S. federal judge has dismissed criminal charges against Indian billionaire Gautam Adani after the U.S. Justice Department decided to abandon its fraud and bribery case.
Brooklyn-based U.S. District Judge Nicholas Garaufis granted prosecutors’ request to dismiss the case after questioning their reasons for seeking the dismissal, according to the provided Reuters report.
Adani had been charged in 2024 with allegedly agreeing to bribe Indian government officials in connection with a solar energy project and allegedly misleading U.S. investors about his company’s anti-corruption practices.
The Adani Group has consistently denied wrongdoing.
Following the court’s decision, Gautam Adani posted a statement welcoming the ruling and saying his faith in truth, fairness and the rule of law remained unwavering.
The case had attracted international attention because of Adani’s status as one of India’s most prominent business figures and the global reach of the Adani Group.
