Mumbai Metro’s new ‘spit bin’ has sparked a debate on social media, with users questioning why a facility for spitting has been installed when spitting at Metro stations is already prohibited.
The debate began after a social media post showing the touchless ‘spit bin’ at a Mumbai Metro station went viral. One user sarcastically described it as a Metro with “dedicated spitting zones”, while others questioned what the facility was encouraging. Some also asked why a designated space for spitting was needed when commuters can face a ₹500 fine for spitting on Metro premises.
So, what exactly is this unusual facility?
The ‘spit bin’, created by Ezyspit, is designed as a dedicated, touchless place to spit. It claims to lock away viruses within 10 seconds and is branded as the “World’s First Defined Place to Spit.” The facility has been installed with a ‘Be Responsible’ message.
The initiative is currently being tested as a pilot project. If the pilot is successful, the facility could be implemented across Mumbai Metro stations.
FPJ visited the spot and spoke to Metro commuters to understand whether they see the facility as a practical solution or an unnecessary move. While some commuters said it could help keep stations cleaner, reduce spitting in public spaces and help people who chew tobacco, others raised concerns over hygiene, infections and whether a dedicated spitting facility sends the wrong message about civic sense.
The debate now goes beyond one bin: Can providing a designated place to spit make Metro stations cleaner, or does it risk normalising a habit that is already prohibited?
