Franz Konrad was an Austrian SS officer whose career became closely associated with the exploitation of the Warsaw Ghetto during the Second World War. Born in 1906, he joined the Austrian Nazi movement in the early 1930s and later entered the SS administrative service. Following Germany’s invasion of Poland in September 1939, Konrad was transferred to Warsaw, where he became involved in the management and seizure of property under German occupation. By the summer of 1942, the Warsaw Ghetto had become the centre of a vast operation involving the confiscation of Jewish businesses, homes and personal possessions. Konrad assumed responsibility for the Werterfassung, an organization that collected, valued and distributed property left behind during the deportations. Thousands of Jewish workers were employed in its warehouses and workshops, handling everything from furniture and clothing to jewellery, paintings and valuable collections. Konrad’s growing influence, business dealings and personal enrichment earned him the nickname “the King of the Warsaw Ghetto.” His activities also brought him into contact with industrialist Walther Többens and senior SS officers, including Jürgen Stroop. During the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising in April and May 1943, Konrad continued supervising property operations as German forces dismantled the ghetto. His relationship with Stroop deteriorated, and he was eventually transferred to other administrative assignments. After the war, Konrad was arrested by American forces and transferred to Polish custody. In 1951, he stood trial in Warsaw alongside Stroop, where his involvement in the occupation and exploitation of the ghetto came under judicial examination. This documentary explores Franz Konrad’s biography, his connections within the Nazi administration, the economic exploitation of occupied Poland and the wider history of the Holocaust. Drawing on historical testimony and post-war proceedings, it examines how administrative authority, commercial interests and personal ambition became intertwined with the policies of the Third Reich.
