The German 6th Army became one of the most famous formations of the Second World War, remembered above all for its fate at Stalingrad. Yet its history also reveals the wider character of Nazi Germany’s campaign in the Soviet Union and the involvement of the Wehrmacht in occupation policies far behind the front lines. Created in 1939 under General Walter von Reichenau, the 6th Army fought in Western Europe before joining Operation Barbarossa in June 1941. Advancing through Soviet Ukraine, its soldiers operated under orders that removed many of the traditional restraints of military law. The army cooperated with SS and police units, provided support during actions against Jewish communities at Bila Tserkva and Babyn Yar, and helped enforce occupation policies that contributed to widespread hunger among civilians and Soviet prisoners of war. Reichenau’s Severity Order openly presented the conflict as an ideological struggle aligned with Nazi objectives. After Reichenau’s death, command passed to Friedrich Paulus. In 1942, the 6th Army spearheaded Fall Blau, the German summer offensive towards the Caucasus and the Volga. Its advance eventually brought it to Stalingrad, where months of intense fighting transformed the campaign. In November 1942, Operation Uranus surrounded between 250,000 and 300,000 Axis soldiers. Hitler refused to permit a breakout, Hermann Göring’s promised Luftwaffe supply operation proved inadequate, and a German relief attempt failed. Paulus surrendered on 31 January 1943, with the remaining forces following two days later. Around 91,000 men entered Soviet captivity, of whom only approximately 5,000 to 6,000 eventually returned to Germany. This documentary traces the 6th Army from its early victories to Operation Barbarossa, its role in occupied Ukraine, the Battle of Stalingrad, and the consequences that followed.
