After the collapse of Nazi Germany in 1945, Europe entered a period of uncertainty and reconstruction. Allied authorities searched for leading figures connected to the Holocaust and other wartime crimes, while thousands of former SS officers, collaborators, and officials attempted to disappear into the confusion of postwar Europe. In Rome, far from the ruins of Berlin, one Catholic bishop would later become associated with some of the most controversial escape networks of the twentieth century. His name was Alois Hudal. This documentary explores the life and legacy of Bishop Alois Hudal, an Austrian churchman whose political views and wartime activities continue to provoke debate among historians. Born in Graz in 1885, Hudal rose through the Catholic hierarchy before becoming rector of the German-speaking college Santa Maria dell’Anima in Rome. During the 1930s, he increasingly embraced German nationalism and developed strong anti-communist convictions, believing that National Socialism could serve as a barrier against Soviet expansion in Europe. The film examines Hudal’s controversial relationship with the Nazi regime, including his writings in support of aspects of National Socialism and claims that he may have acted as an intermediary for German intelligence during the war. It also follows the development of the so-called “ratlines” after 1945 — the escape routes through which former Nazis and SS officers obtained false identity papers and fled Europe. Among the men linked to these networks were figures associated with Sobibor, Treblinka, and Auschwitz-Birkenau. Through archival material, historical research, and postwar testimony, this documentary examines the complex relationship between ideology, religion, and politics during one of the most turbulent periods in European history. It is the story of a bishop whose actions after the war left behind lasting questions about responsibility, loyalty, and the moral consequences of helping former members of the Nazi regime escape justice.
