Nearly 60 countries that are part of the Antarctic Treaty have concluded a two-week meeting in Hiroshima, Japan, held behind closed doors and away from media access.
Delegates, diplomats, and scientists who conduct research in Antarctica discussed technical and administrative details on how to govern and share the vast continent.
The discussions come amid growing global interest in the polar region and its environmental and scientific importance.
Al Jazeera’s Colin Baker explains the unique international agreement that continues to protect Antarctica and regulate activity there.
