Back in 2021, China imposed sanctions on five members of the European parliament. The action was part of a series of tit-for-tat measures in response to EU sanctions over China’s treatment of Uighur Muslims in Xinjiang. That row over human rights halted a major investment deal between the EU and China. Later the European Parliament froze all official dialogue with Beijing. Relations remained frosty, but now China says it’s lifting sanctions against the EU lawmakers and says it wants a thaw in economic ties.
