The Fashion Queen of the Third Reich: Nazi Agent Coco Chanel

Coco Chanel remains one of the most influential figures in fashion history, but her life during the Second World War continues to generate debate among historians. This documentary examines the evidence surrounding her activities during the German occupation of France, tracing the story of a designer whose legacy extends far beyond the world of haute couture.
Born into poverty, Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel overcame a difficult childhood to build one of the world’s most recognizable luxury brands. By the late 1930s, she had become one of Europe’s most successful businesswomen, with her designs and Chanel No. 5 perfume transforming the fashion industry. The outbreak of war, however, marked the beginning of the most controversial chapter of her life. Following the German occupation of Paris in 1940, Chanel remained in the French capital and entered a relationship with German intelligence officer Hans Günther von Dincklage. Declassified records later identified her as having connections to German intelligence, while historians have also examined her efforts to use anti-Jewish legislation in an attempt to gain control of the profitable Parfums Chanel company. She later became involved in Operation Modellhut, an unsuccessful intelligence initiative that sought to use her friendship with Winston Churchill in an effort to open secret diplomatic contacts.
After the liberation of France, Chanel was questioned by French authorities but was released without charges. Rumours that Churchill may have influenced her treatment have circulated for decades, although no conclusive evidence has ever confirmed them. She later returned to the fashion world, rebuilding her business and once again becoming one of the industry’s leading designers. This documentary explores Coco Chanel’s remarkable rise, her wartime choices, and the lasting historical debate surrounding one of fashion’s most celebrated and controversial figures.
