Security has been tightened outside a Sri Lankan prison after the country’s deadliest prison riot in more than five years claimed 23 lives, including six prison guards.
According to police, the violence broke out overnight during clashes between inmates belonging to two rival drug gangs. More than 100 people were injured and rushed to Negombo Hospital, north of the capital Colombo, for treatment.
Authorities have deployed additional security personnel around the prison as investigations into the incident continue.
