France is turning into a security fortress! Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez has ordered 70,000 police officers and gendarmes across the country as another wave of demonstrations threatens to erupt. Armoured vehicles, water cannons, helicopters and drones are being mobilised, while authorities warn that violence, looting and attacks on public buildings will not be tolerated.
The crackdown comes after massive demonstrations on November 5, when hundreds of thousands took to the streets over wages, the rising cost of living and public services. While the Interior Ministry counted 575,000 protesters, unions claimed the turnout was nearly 1.6 million. More than 600 people were also detained, according to the Interior Minister, as clashes and unrest were reported in several cities. Now, with another round of mobilisation underway on November 7, France is bracing for fresh confrontation. Is Macron’s government losing control of the streets?
