NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on Wednesday (June 25) denied calling President Donald Trump “daddy” intervening in a schoolyard brawl after the U.S. leader repeatedly berated Middle East foes Israel and Iran this week including with a profanity.
Talking to reporters alongside Rutte at a NATO alliance summit earlier in the day, Trump likened Israel and Iran to “two kids in a schoolyard”.
In response, Rutte laughed and said: “And then daddy has to sometimes use strong language to get (them to) stop.”
In an interview with Reuters after the summit ended, Rutte said he had not called Trump “daddy”.
“In Europe, I hear sometimes countries saying, hey, Mark, will the U.S. stay with us? And I said, that sounds a little bit like a small child asking his daddy, hey, are you still staying with the family? So in that sense, I use daddy, not that I was calling President Trump daddy,” Rutte said.
At the summit, NATO leaders backed the big increase in defence spending that Trump had demanded, and restated their commitment to defend each other from attack.
In the interview, Rutte said the defence spending increase was “doable” for European NATO members who he said were among the richest countries in the world.
