So she sits down with Issam Hijazi, the Palestinian founder and CEO of UpScrolled, to talk about what he’s actually building and why. In two years the app has grown from 150,000 to 5 million users with zero paid marketing, driven almost entirely by people fleeing TikTok censorship. Issam walks through what makes it different: no algorithm manipulating your feed, no infinite doom-scroll design, chronological timeline of people you actually follow, minimum age 16, and content moderation applied equally across all groups — no selective enforcement based on who’s politically convenient. He also doesn’t sugarcoat the threats: anonymous messages to his personal phone, Apple and Google executives calling to pressure him when the app hit number one in the charts, bot floods and CSAM attacks designed to get the app labeled a hate speech platform, and a Saudi Arabia ban with no explanation. He lost 60 family members in Gaza. He says he has nothing left to lose. Kim and Issam also get into Elon Musk’s transformation — why she thinks SpaceX and security clearances were the leverage used on him — and the structural problem every alternative platform faces: when Apple, Google, and AWS all have kill switches, independence is relative until you’re big enough to resist. Kim’s conclusion: her UpScrolled audience is already bigger than her TikTok was anyway.
