Whistled for Like a Dog: The Humiliation of Hitler’s Most Loyal Wife

Gerda Bormann was one of the most devoted female supporters of National Socialism and a prominent figure within Adolf Hitler’s inner circle. Born Gerda Buch in 1909, she grew up in a household deeply connected to the Nazi movement. Her father, Walter Buch, was an early member of the Nazi Party and a close associate of Adolf Hitler, exposing Gerda to the ideology that would shape her entire adult life. In 1929, she married Martin Bormann, the ambitious party official who would eventually become Hitler’s private secretary and one of the most powerful men in the Third Reich. Together, they built a family that embodied Nazi ideals of loyalty, obedience, and racial ideology. During the Second World War, Gerda lived with her husband and ten children at Obersalzberg, the mountain complex surrounding Hitler’s Berghof in the Bavarian Alps. As Martin Bormann’s influence grew, the family occupied a privileged position at the centre of Nazi power. Gerda embraced the regime’s vision of motherhood and family life, receiving the Gold Cross of Honour of the German Mother for bearing ten children. She openly supported National Socialist policies and expressed strong antisemitic views in private correspondence, while advocating radical ideas that reflected her commitment to the regime’s demographic ambitions. This documentary explores Gerda Bormann’s life, her relationship with Martin Bormann, and her place within Hitler’s inner circle. It examines family life at Obersalzberg, the influence of Nazi ideology within the Bormann household, and the role Gerda played in supporting one of the most powerful figures of the Third Reich. The film also follows the collapse of Nazi Germany in 1945, the destruction of the Obersalzberg complex, Gerda’s flight into northern Italy, and her final months after the war. Through letters, historical records, and eyewitness accounts, this documentary provides insight into the life of a woman who remained committed to National Socialism until the very end
