The 2nd SS Panzer Division Das Reich became one of the most well-known formations of the Waffen-SS, serving on nearly every major European front during the Second World War. Formed before the conflict as part of the SS-Verfügungstruppe, the division evolved into a key military unit of Nazi Germany while remaining closely tied to the ideology of the SS. From the campaigns in France and the Balkans to the vast battles of the Eastern Front, its operational history reflected both Germany’s military expansion and the increasingly ideological nature of the war. This documentary follows the history of Das Reich from its early campaigns through Operation Barbarossa, where years of fighting on the Eastern Front shaped its commanders and soldiers. The film examines the division’s role in anti-partisan operations, its cooperation with other SS formations, and its involvement in crimes committed against civilians and prisoners of war as the conflict intensified. Drawing on historical records and archival material, it explores how military operations became closely linked with Nazi racial and political objectives. Special attention is given to the division’s transfer to France in 1944 following the Allied landings in Normandy. As resistance activity increased and German forces attempted to slow the Allied advance, Das Reich carried out a series of reprisals that culminated in the destruction of Oradour-sur-Glane, one of the most significant wartime tragedies in occupied France. The documentary also examines events in Tulle and other locations affected during the division’s advance toward Normandy, placing these actions within the broader context of German occupation policy. The film concludes by tracing the final months of the division, its heavy losses in Normandy, the Ardennes, and Hungary, and the postwar fate of several of its commanders. Some died before Germany’s surrender, while others faced investigations or legal proceedings in the years that followed. Through historical evidence and expert research, this documentary explores how one military formation became closely associated with some of the darkest chapters of the Second World War and why its legacy continues to be studied today.
