This documentary examines the life of Amanda Ratajczak, a senior nurse at the Meseritz-Obrawalde psychiatric hospital and one of the medical workers involved in Nazi Germany’s programme targeting people with mental and physical disabilities. Ratajczak had worked at the institution for decades before becoming a central participant in the systematic deaths of patients during the Second World War. The film traces the origins of Aktion T4, the secret programme authorised by Adolf Hitler in 1939. Under the scheme, institutionalised patients considered incurably ill were selected by medical evaluators and transported to specialised centres. By August 1941, more than 70,000 people had died as part of the programme. Although Hitler officially halted the centralised operation that year, the policy continued inside psychiatric institutions through deliberate starvation and lethal doses of medication. At Obrawalde, doctors Hilde Wernicke and Theophil Mootz selected patients for death, while senior nurses including Ratajczak carried out their instructions. Ratajczak administered powerful drugs including morphine, scopolamine and Veronal and directed other members of the nursing staff to participate. During her later interrogation, she admitted responsibility for the deaths of more than 1,500 patients. As Soviet forces approached in January 1945, senior members of the hospital staff fled. Ratajczak was captured several weeks later and returned to Obrawalde, where Soviet investigators were examining records and evidence left behind. She was subsequently tried by a Soviet military tribunal and sentenced to death in April 1945.
The documentary also explores the wider significance of Aktion T4 and its connection to the Holocaust, examining how personnel and methods developed during the programme were later employed in the systematic persecution and mass murder of European Jews.
