When German 4th Panzer Division Paid for What They Did

In April 1944, one year before the end of the Second World War, in northern Greece, a small mountain village found itself at the centre of a German anti-partisan operation. Under Axis control since 1941, Greece had endured years of instability, as German forces sought to suppress growing resistance movements such as ELAS, the Greek People’s Liberation Army. Entire communities were drawn into this struggle, often facing severe consequences for even suspected support of guerrilla fighters. As part of a large anti-partisan campaign, German units, supported by collaborators, moved through Western Macedonia in an effort to secure key transport routes. Villages along these corridors were seen not only as strategic locations but also as potential sources of resistance support. Pyrgoi, situated in this contested region, became one of the targets during these operations. On 24 April 1944, the village was attacked, and hundreds of civilians lost their lives while much of the settlement was destroyed. The events formed part of a broader pattern seen across occupied Europe, where military operations blurred the line between combat and collective punishment. Testimonies collected after the war provide insight into how these actions unfolded and how communities were affected. The destruction of homes, loss of livestock, and displacement of survivors meant that even those who lived through the attack faced long-term hardship. In the years that followed, attention turned to questions of responsibility. Some of those involved, including local collaborators, were later brought before courts, while others never faced formal proceedings. The Pyrgoi massacre remains one of many episodes that illustrate the complex and often devastating interaction between occupation forces, resistance movements, and civilian populations during the war.
